God of my Life to Thee I call

I have been listening to a band called Red Mountain Church alot lately.  They have a new album out now too by the way! They put new music to old (and sometimes long forgotten) hymn text.  This is a song that I have really appreciated lately...

God of my life, to Thee I call;
Afflicted, at Thy feet I fall;
When the great water-floods prevail,
Leave not my trembling heart to fall.

Friend of the friendless and the faint,
Where should I lodge my deep complaint?
Where but with Thee, whose open door
Invites the helpless and the poor?

Did ever mourner plead with Thee
And Thou refuse that moumer's plea?
Does not the word still fixed remain
That none shall seek Thy face in vain?

Poor though I be, despised, forgot,
Yet God, my God, forgets me not;
And he is safe and must succeed
For whom the Lord vouchsafes to plead.

Author: William Cowper 1779

  1. Lovely -- but not kitschy or shallow -- deep truths for the heart! I think this song is also on the CD that you made for me -- I'm still stuck on 'Feast or Fallow' and am not sure about which the other songs are -- although I have listened to them.

  2. just read up on him -- cowper that is -- on Wikipedia. He had quite a life. Not an easy road. No wonder his lyrics are not light and airy.

  3. Thanks for sharing this hymn. Yes, the words run deep. Painful praise does that. Psalm 130 comes to mind.

    Woke at about 5:15am Winnipeg time, and felt led to pray for you guys specifically. So we did...starting our day off with the Lord Jesus and you on our hearts...

    Love,
